Taking Care of What the Tree Left Behind

Stump grinding is how most leftover stumps in Tyler yards get dealt with. A grinder with a toothed cutting wheel chews the stump into chips, working down below the soil surface, so the spot can be filled, leveled and seeded. Pulling a stump out whole means digging up its root ball and leaves a large hole; grinding is quicker, costs less and disturbs far less of the yard. A stump left alone will eventually rot, but a big oak or pecan stump can take years, and in the meantime it gets in the way of the mower and can send up sprouts.

Before the grinder starts

Grinding goes several inches into the ground, so buried lines matter. Oncor's own guidance tells homeowners to call Texas 811 (811 or 800-344-8377) before any digging so underground lines can be located. Private lines such as irrigation, low-voltage lighting, a gas line to a shop or a septic line are not marked by 811, so we ask you where those run. Rocks and old fence posts buried in a stump are common and dull or break grinder teeth, so we look for them first.

How deep and how wide

Most lawn stumps are ground several inches below grade, enough to cover with soil and grow grass. Where you plan to plant a new tree or build a bed, we can go deeper or widen the area. Surface roots that run out from the stump can be ground along their length to a point, but stump grinding does not remove the whole root system; HomeGuide's 2026 guide prices root removal separately for that reason.

Pine stumps and oak stumps

Pine stumps in East Texas are full of resin and break down slowly; oak and pecan stumps are dense and take longer to grind. A stump from a beetle-killed or canker-killed tree is still worth grinding: it removes a tripping hazard and the decayed wood that fungi and insects use. On acreage or wooded lots, stumps from several trees can often be ground in one visit at a lower price for each one.

The chips

Grinding leaves a mound of chips mixed with soil, often more than people expect. Chips can be raked into the hole and left to settle, spread in beds as mulch, or hauled away and replaced with topsoil. Fresh grindings settle as they decay, so a little extra soil on top a few weeks later usually evens the spot out.

Stump Grinding Questions

How deep is a stump ground?

For a lawn, typically several inches below the surface, enough to cover with soil and grass. If you want to plant something in the same spot, we can grind deeper and wider. The depth is written into the quote.

Will the roots keep growing after grinding?

Most roots die once the stump is gone, but some species can send up sprouts from remaining roots. Sprouts can be cut back as they appear; they usually stop after a season or two.

Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?

Yes, but it is easier just off to the side. Wood chips and decaying roots in the hole settle and tie up nitrogen as they break down. If you want the exact spot, have the chips removed and the hole filled with soil.

Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?

Yes. Grinding goes below the surface, and Texas 811 (811 or 800-344-8377) arranges for public underground lines to be marked. Private lines, such as irrigation or a line to a shop, are not marked, so tell us where they run.
