Lake Lots, Golf Lots, Wooded Lots

Tree Service in Hideaway comes with its own set of logistics. Hideaway is a gated, largely residential community in Smith County with 3,201 residents at the 2020 census. Developer James Fair planned it in 1967 as Hide-A-Way Lake, on 1,350 acres laid out for 1,944 residential lots, on land that had once been part of a plantation owned by Texas governor Richard B. Hubbard. Of its 2.43 square miles, about 0.36 square miles is water, and the community also takes in the golf facilities run by Hideaway Lake Club, Inc. Lake edges, fairways and wooded interior streets each call for a different approach.

Access and scheduling

Because the community is gated, we arrange entry ahead of time and give you the vehicle details you need. In 2000 the homeowners' association and the club merged into a municipal corporation, so it is worth asking the club office whether any approvals or work-hour rules apply to your street before we schedule. We bring only the equipment the job needs, keep trucks off soft shoulders and park so neighbors and golf carts can get by.

Trees at the water's edge

Shoreline trees are the hardest to work on and the most valuable to the view. Their roots are often undercut by wave action, they lean toward the open water and the light, and the drop zone is a dock, a boathouse or the lake itself. For those we usually:

  • Climb and lower limbs by rope instead of dropping them
  • Prune to open a view window rather than topping or stripping the tree
  • Remove leaning or undercut trees in sections, working away from the dock
  • Keep sawdust and chips out of the water

Fairway and wooded lots

Homes along the golf course deal with errant balls and limbs over the cart path; homes on interior streets tend to sit under a closed canopy. We raise canopies for clearance, thin crowded stands so the remaining trees get light and wind can move through, and remove dead pines before they shed limbs onto roofs.

What the native forest looks like here

Tyler State Park, also in Smith County, gives a good picture of the forest type around here. Texas Parks and Wildlife describes its woods as a mature pine-hardwood mix with many trees 75 to 100 years old: shortleaf pine on the higher, drier ground, loblolly pine on the lower ground, and oaks including southern red, post, blackjack and water oak, plus sweetgum, eastern red cedar, pecan and sassafras, over an understory of flowering dogwood, redbud and yaupon. When we suggest replacement trees for a Hideaway lot, we lean toward those natives matched to whether the spot is high and dry or low and wet.

  • Lots of water. Hideaway covers 2.43 square miles, of which 0.36 square miles is water; the 2020 population was 3,201.
  • Club and city in one. In 2000 the homeowners' association and Hideaway Lake Club, Inc. merged into a municipal corporation of the same name, which operates the golf facilities.
  • Local forest type. TPWD describes nearby Tyler State Park as mature pine-hardwood forest with shortleaf pine on high, dry ground and loblolly pine on lower ground, many trees 75-100 years old.

Hideaway Questions

Can you take down a tree next to my dock without damaging it?

Usually, yes. We climb the tree and lower pieces by rope away from the dock and boathouse, then cut the trunk in short sections. If the tree is badly undercut or leaning over the structure, we explain the options before we start.

Can you open up a lake view without killing the tree?

Yes. Selective thinning and raising can open a view window while keeping the tree healthy. We avoid topping, which leads to weak regrowth and decay.

Do I need club approval for tree work in Hideaway?

Ask the club office about your street before work is scheduled, since the community is gated and run as a municipal corporation. We will work to whatever access times and requirements they give you.

What should I plant to replace a lost tree on my lot?

Match the tree to the spot. On high, dry ground shortleaf pine and post or southern red oak fit; lower, wetter spots suit loblolly pine and water oak. Dogwood and redbud work as smaller understory trees.
