Brush Rules Changed in Kilgore
Tree Service in Kilgore got a little more complicated in late 2025, when the city cut curbside brush pickup from monthly to three times a year. Kilgore is a city of about 13,400 people (2020 census), mostly in Gregg County with the rest in Rusk County, where Interstate 20 meets U.S. 259 in the Piney Woods south of the Sabine River. With trees on most lots and fewer pickups, what happens to the brush is now a real part of planning any tree job here.
The "Four 6s"
Starting in October 2025, city crews collect brush in February, July and October, working four district routes during a set week each month. Piles must be no more than 6 feet long, 6 feet wide and 6 feet high, and limbs no more than 6 inches in diameter. Piles over those limits are not collected; residents can take them to the Green Waste Center at 2100 Longview Street, open Friday through Sunday for residential use. A single mature pine or oak removal produces far more than one 6-by-6-by-6 pile, and trunk wood is well over 6 inches, so we include chipping and hauling in our Kilgore quotes unless you ask otherwise. For small trimming jobs, we can cut and stack brush to the city's limits if your pickup week is coming up.
The October 2025 tornado
On October 28, 2025, radar confirmed a tornado near Kilgore, and a Weather Service survey rated it EF1 with peak winds near 94 mph. Many trees went down. Several fell on a house near Monroe and Simmons streets just south of R.E. St. John Stadium, and some streets stayed blocked while city crews and private contractors cleared debris. Power stayed out in parts of town, and some homes had their service lines torn from the meter box. SWEPCO said homeowners had to have those repairs made before it could restore power, a detail worth knowing: if a falling tree rips the line off your house, you will likely need an electrician as well as a tree crew.
Oil-field history in the yard
Kilgore boomed after the Daisy Bradford #3 well opened the East Texas Oil Field in October 1930. By the 1940s more than 1,000 wooden derricks stood in the city, and one acre earned the name "the world's richest acre." Today 60 star-topped steel replicas recall that era. Where homes from those decades remain, their oaks and pines have grown large and are often hemmed in by later additions, garages and lines.
Typical Kilgore work
- Removing storm-damaged and leaning trees, with full haul-off
- Pruning large trees off roofs and service drops
- Thinning crowns on older neighborhood oaks
- Grinding stumps left after storm cleanup
- Small trims cut to the Four 6s for city pickup

Kilgore Questions
Will Kilgore pick up the brush from my tree removal?
Only if it fits the Four 6s and you set it out for your district's week in February, July or October. Most removals exceed those limits, so we include hauling. Larger loads you handle yourself can go to the Green Waste Center on Longview Street.
A tree tore the power line off my house. Who do I call first?
Stay clear and call SWEPCO to report it. After the 2025 tornado, SWEPCO told homeowners whose service lines were pulled from the meter box that those repairs had to be made before power could be restored, so you may also need an electrician. We remove the tree once the line is safe.
Can you cut my trimmings to fit city pickup?
Yes. For small pruning jobs, we can cut limbs under 6 inches and stack them in piles within the 6-by-6-by-6 limit so the city crew will take them.
Do you offer emergency tree removal in Kilgore?
You can call (903) 636-8096 any time to leave details and photos. We schedule storm work by risk, starting with trees on homes and blocking driveways.
