An Old Fruit Town and Its Trees
Tree Service in Arp often means dealing with trees that were planted, or simply allowed to grow, a long time ago. Arp is a small city of 892 people (2020 census) in eastern Smith County. In the 1800s the settlement was called Bissa, a Choctaw and Chickasaw word for blackberry; later it was Jarvis Junction, and then Strawberry, after the berries grown here. It was eventually renamed for Bill Arp, the pen name of Georgia humorist Charles Henry Smith, and the story goes that the short name was easier for strawberry growers to hand-mark on crates.
What old home places hold
Properties around Arp often carry the remnants of that farming past: big pecans by the house, oaks along old fence lines, cedars that came up where birds perched on wire, and the odd fruit tree long past bearing. Many of those trees are now big, old and declining. We see hollow trunks, heavy limbs extended out over roofs and sheds, and root systems damaged by decades of vehicle traffic. Our job is to sort which ones can be pruned and kept and which should come down before they fail.
Empty houses, overgrown lots
At the 2020 census Arp had 407 housing units and 14 percent of them were vacant. Vacant houses and lots tend to collect dead trees and leaning pines that nobody is watching. If you have inherited a home place or bought a lot to fix up, we can clear it in stages: hazards first, then brush and volunteers, then stumps.
April 10, 2017
An EF1 tornado touched down about 3 miles northwest of Arp that night, with peak winds of 80 to 90 mph over a short path of about half a mile, and damaged and uprooted several trees. The same storm produced a stronger EF1 near Overton. Short-lived tornadoes like that, and the straight-line winds that come with spring storms, are the main reason we get called to Arp for emergency cleanup.
Near Lake Tyler
Arp is one of the towns closest to Lake Tyler, the city of Tyler's water-supply lake built in 1949 and joined to Lake Tyler East in 1968. Many rural properties between Arp and the lake are wooded acreage, and we do removals, pruning and lot clearing there as well.

Arp History and Housing
- Four names. Arp was called Bissa (a Choctaw/Chickasaw word for blackberry), then Jarvis Junction and Strawberry, before being renamed for humorist Bill Arp.
- Vacancy. The 2020 census counted 892 residents, 350 households and 407 housing units, 14.0% of them vacant.
- 2017 tornado. An EF1 with 80-90 mph peak winds touched down about 3 miles northwest of Arp on April 10, 2017, damaging and uprooting several trees along a 0.46-mile path.
- Close to Lake Tyler. Lake Tyler, built in 1949 on Prairie Creek and joined by canal to Lake Tyler East in 1968, lies closer to Whitehouse and Arp than to Tyler itself.

Arp Questions
There is a huge old pecan by my house in Arp. Can it be saved?
Often, yes. Removing deadwood and reducing heavy limbs over the roof can extend its life for years. If the trunk is hollow through much of its width or the root flare is decayed, removal may be the safer call, and we will tell you which we see.
Can you clean up an inherited home place in stages?
Yes. We usually start with trees that threaten the house or the road, then clear brush and volunteer trees, and grind stumps last. Each stage gets its own line on the estimate.
Do you do emergency tree removal near Arp after storms?
Yes. Call (903) 636-8096 any time to leave details. We prioritize trees on houses, blocking drives or hanging over people's paths.
Do you work on acreage between Arp and Lake Tyler?
Yes. We handle wooded rural lots there, including removals, pruning and clearing for drives or home sites.
Is it worth keeping an old fruit tree that no longer produces?
That is mostly a matter of taste. A small, sound fruit tree is low risk and can stay for shade or sentiment. If it is split, hollow or leaning toward a building, we would remove it and grind the stump so you can plant something new in its place.
