Homes Built Into the Woods

Tree Service in Bullard is mostly about living with the woods people chose to build in. Bullard grew from 2,463 residents in 2010 to 3,318 in 2020, and the Census estimates about 5,300 now. Roughly 86 percent of homes are owner-occupied, one of the highest rates around Tyler, and a lot of those houses sit on lots where the builder kept as many mature pines and oaks as possible. That looks great until a summer storm puts a limb through the roof.

A town on a county line

Most of Bullard is in southern Smith County, but a small part extends into Cherokee County. The town traces back to 1870, when John and Emma Bullard settled here, and it grew after the Kansas and Gulf Short Line Railroad built a depot on its way from Tyler to Lufkin. Today U.S. 69 runs along the east side of town, and FM 344, FM 2137 and FM 2493 meet here. If you are not sure which county your property is in, check before you plan any burning, since burn bans are set county by county.

Two tornadoes, same intersection area

The Weather Service has surveyed two tornadoes right at Bullard. On October 6, 2008, a brief EF0 with 90 mph winds touched down where FM 344 meets Highway 69 and followed FM 344 northeast toward Inwood Drive, snapping trees in a wooded patch and toppling one along the road. On May 6, 2025, an EF1 with peak winds of 93 mph did its worst damage near North Houston Street, west of U.S. 69 and just north of Lynch Drive, uprooting and snapping several trees and damaging roofs. Neither caused injuries, but both show how quickly a wooded lot here can go from shade to cleanup.

How we approach a wooded Bullard lot

On heavily treed lots, removing one tree changes the wind load on the ones next to it. Trees that grew up sheltered in a stand have tall, thin trunks and small crowns, and when their neighbors come out, they are suddenly exposed. So we look at the stand as a group:

  • Which trees threaten the house, garage or pool if they fail
  • Which ones are already declining and should go first
  • Which healthy trees to keep as a windbreak
  • Where to raise canopies for light and airflow without stripping interior limbs

Then we put the plan in writing, often in phases so you can spread the cost.

Stumps and new projects

Families here add shops, pools and driveways all the time, and the stumps left from clearing get in the way. We grind stumps below grade so you can pour, plant or sod over the spot, and we flag shallow utilities before we start. Call (903) 636-8096 or send the form with your road and a few photos. Bullard Questions

I want to thin the trees around my Bullard house. Will that make the rest more likely to blow over?

It can if it is done all at once. Trees that grew in a tight stand rely on each other for wind protection, so we usually remove the riskiest ones first and leave a buffer of healthy trees. Spreading thinning over a couple of seasons gives the remaining trees time to adjust.

Which burn rules apply to my property?

That depends on whether you are inside town limits and which county you are in, since Smith and Cherokee counties each set their own burn bans. Check with the town and county before you light anything. Many owners skip the question and have us chip the brush instead.

Can you grind stumps where we are putting in a pool or shop?

Yes. Tell us what is going in so we grind deep enough for that use. We also mark where we think shallow lines run and ask you to have utilities located before we start.

A tree came down in the May 2025 storm and the stump is still there. Is it too late to grind it?

No. Old stumps grind fine, and dry ones are often easier. We will also check the trees near it, since a storm that uproots one tree often loosens others.
