Mineola's Brush Rules, Explained
Tree Service in Mineola comes with clear city rules about what happens to the limbs afterward, and they matter for both homeowners and tree crews. Mineola is a Wood County city of 4,823 people (2020 census), about 26 miles north of Tyler where U.S. 69 and U.S. 80 cross downtown. Its public works department runs brush and leaf collection, and its October 2019 brush ordinance draws a firm line: debris created by contractors is the contractor's job to remove, and the city will not pick it up.
If a tree company does the work
That ordinance means any tree crew working in Mineola should haul off its own brush and wood. When you compare quotes, check that cleanup and disposal are included in writing. A low price that leaves a pile at the curb can leave you with a pile the city will not take. Our Mineola estimates always say how brush, logs and chips will be handled.
If you trim it yourself
For homeowner trimmings, Mineola runs one brush and limb route a month, starting the first working day and moving from the south end of town north. Limb pickup runs September through May and leaf pickup November through April. To be collected:
- Limbs 6 inches or less in diameter must be cut to 36-inch lengths, and larger limbs or logs to 31-inch lengths
- Brush, limbs and leaves go in separate piles
- Piles sit in the yard behind the curb, never in the street, alley or right-of-way, and not on drainage or utility meter boxes
Oversize loads may be left behind. You can also take yard trimmings to the city burn site at the end of Bromberg Street, and City Hall (903-569-6183) answers pickup questions.
Storms along Highway 80
On February 10, 2009, an EF1 tornado with 85 to 90 mph winds crossed from Smith County into Wood County late at night. North of Highway 80 east of Mineola it peeled roof sections off several homes and snapped and uprooted many trees, and it damaged several more trees and a few homes at FM 1801 before weakening. The full path ran 6.8 miles, with trees snapped, uprooted or stripped of limbs along much of it.
Trees and birds
Mineola calls itself the Birding Capital of East Texas, and its 2,911-acre Mineola Nature Preserve, established in 2005, is described as the largest city-owned park per capita in the country. Birds nest in yard trees too. In spring and early summer we look for active nests before pruning or removal and will reschedule non-urgent work when we find one.
Who we work for
About 28 percent of Mineola residents are 65 or older, well above the national share, and many homes have mature trees that their owners no longer want to handle themselves. We prune, remove, grind stumps and clean up, so there is nothing left for anyone to haul. Call (903) 636-8096 for a visit and a written estimate. Get a free estimate
Mineola Rules and Records
- Contractor debris. Mineola's October 2019 brush ordinance makes contractors responsible for removing and disposing of debris from their work; the city will not collect it.
- Cut lengths. For city pickup, limbs 6 inches or smaller in diameter must be cut into 36-inch lengths and larger limbs into 31-inch lengths, in separate piles behind the curb.
- Seasonal routes. Crews run one route per month; limb pickup runs September-May and leaf pickup November-April, with a drop-off burn site at the end of Bromberg Street.
- 2009 tornado. An EF1 (85-90 mph) on February 10, 2009 snapped and uprooted many trees and peeled roofs north of Highway 80 east of Mineola along a 6.8-mile path.
- Older residents. Census figures show 27.9% of Mineola residents are 65 or older; 56.3% of homes are owner-occupied, with a median value of $215,700.

Mineola Questions
Will Mineola pick up the brush after a tree company cuts my tree?
No. Under the 2019 ordinance, contractors are responsible for their own debris. Make sure any quote you accept includes hauling, as ours do.
How long should I cut limbs for Mineola's brush pickup?
Limbs 6 inches or less in diameter go in 36-inch lengths; larger limbs and logs in 31-inch lengths. Keep brush, limbs and leaves in separate piles behind the curb, not in the street.
Can I take tree trimmings somewhere myself?
Yes. The city lets residents drop yard trimmings at the burn site at the end of Bromberg Street. Call City Hall at 903-569-6183 if you have questions about what is accepted.
Will you trim a tree with a bird nest in it?
If the work is not urgent, we would rather wait until the nest is empty. If a tree is an immediate hazard, safety comes first, and we work to disturb as little as possible.
