Standing Pine, Then Oil, Then Quiet Streets

Tree Service in Overton has a fitting backstory: before there was a town, the Choctaw, Chickasaw and Creek peoples knew this place as Tiyuk Hekia, Standing Pine. Overton today is a city of 2,275 people (2020 census), mostly in Rusk County with a small piece in Smith County. That split puts the Rusk County side in the Longview metro area and the Smith County side in Tyler's, which is part of why people here look both ways for services. We serve the whole town.

Built fast in the 1930s

Overton was platted in 1873 on land donated by early settler Major Frank Overton, and it grew with the Henderson and Overton Branch Railroad in 1875. The big change came in 1930, when wildcatter C. M. "Dad" Joiner drilled a well that Overton helped fund and the East Texas oil boom began. The population jumped from 426 in 1931 to about 4,500 by 1936, then fell by half after World War II. That history explains the housing here: a core of homes built quickly in the boom years, where trees have had decades to grow, plus newer houses on the edges. The old trees in the boom-era neighborhoods are the ones most likely to need major pruning or careful removal.

The 2017 tornado

On the night of April 10, 2017, an EF1 tornado with peak winds of 95 to 105 mph formed about 2 miles northwest of Overton and traveled about 3 miles with a width of 250 yards. Damage was heaviest near the Overton school complex and the cemetery next to it along FM 850, where several trees were snapped and uprooted. Cemeteries and school grounds tend to have big, old, open-grown trees, and that storm showed how exposed they are.

Agriculture next door

Overton is home to the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, established in 1967, whose research covers forages, horticulture and cattle physiology. Its presence is a reminder that much of the land around town is pasture and hay meadow, where scattered big trees shade livestock and line fences. We prune and remove those trees too, and we are careful about where chips and brush end up on grazing land.

  • Trees damaged in spring storms, including split trunks and hangers
  • Pasture and fence-line trees that are dead or dropping limbs

Overton Questions

Do you serve both the Rusk County and Smith County parts of Overton?

Yes. We work throughout Overton and on the rural properties around it in both counties.

The oak by my 1930s house is enormous. Should it come down?

Not necessarily. Big old oaks can often be kept safe for years with deadwood removal and selective weight reduction. If we find serious decay at the base or major cracks, we will explain the risk and the options in writing.

Can you remove a dead tree in a pasture without leaving brush for the cattle?

Yes. We can chip and haul, or cut and stack wood outside the fence. Tell us where the animals are and which gates to use, and we keep cleanup tight so nothing is left lying in the pasture.

What does a free estimate in Overton include?

A visit to look at each tree, a talk about what you want done, and a written price listing the work, cleanup and stump grinding if you want it.

Trees on our cemetery plot or church grounds are dropping limbs. Can you help?

Yes. Open grounds like cemeteries and churchyards often have large, old trees with long, heavy limbs, as the 2017 storm near FM 850 showed. We prune or remove them working around headstones and buildings, lowering wood by rope where there is no room to drop it.
